Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, is a form of sedation used in many dental procedures. This sedation is safe and comfortable that can ease anxiety before treatment.

Nitrous oxide is a colorless, odorless, and non-flammable gas consisting of oxygen and nitrogen. When inhaled as a gas, it can make patients feel light-headed but comfortable. Nitrous oxide is considered one of the safest and most effective forms of medicine in the healthcare system. Due it’s dissociative properties, “laughing gas” will calm a nervous patient so that they can easily receive treatment.

Breathing in nitrous oxide often makes patients feel tingly throughout their body. Their mind will become a little bit foggy but they will have an overwhelming feeling of warmth and comfort. Nitrous oxide does not put patients to sleep, and patients maintain the ability to follow directions and understand their surroundings. The level of sedation is able to be changed based on the intensity of the patient’s reactions. After the procedure is over, patients are sometimes given pure oxygen to help clear the nitrous oxide out of their system. Once you feel clear-headed, you will be able to drive yourself home and continue on with your day.

Nitrous oxide can be a good method of sedation for patients who may experience the following:

Fear of surgical tools or dental procedures
Sensitive gag reflex
Traumatic dental experiences in the past
Allergies to other types of sedatives
